Washingtonville Department of Operations
The Washingtonville Police Department primarly operates under three divisions. The Patrol Division, the Investigations Division, and the Juvenile Division.

Washingtonville Patrol Division

The Washingtonville Police Department Patrol Division is currently comprised of 10 officers. The Patrol Division officers are normally the first responders to calls for service. The Patrol Officer provides for the following:
  1. Prevention and suppression of crime.
  2. Protection of life and property.
  3. Apprehension and prosecution of offenders.
  4. Preservation of regulatory measures.
  5. Preservation of peace.
The Patrol Officer is responsible for exerting every effort to satisfy the needs of citizens, requesting service, assistance or information and when necessary make reports of crimes, vehicular accidents and incidents. Patrol Officers familiarize themselves with their assigned areas and conduct diligent patrol, accentuating prevention rather than arrests. Referrals are made to proper agencies noting conditions which adversely affect the appearance, safety and health of the community and applicable laws, ordinances and regulations are enforced. As the first responders, Patrol Officers conduct a through initial investigation, collects evidence and records data which will aid in the identification, apprehension and prosecution of offenders and the recovery of property.
The Washingtonville Police Department maintains an aggressive traffic enforcement program. All enforcement actions are completed in a firm, fair, impartial, and courteous manner; using arrest, citation, or warnings.
We seek to achieve two objectives -- both immediate and long term -- through traffic enforcement. The immediate objective of traffic enforcement is to take appropriate enforcement action given the circumstances; the long term objective is to favorably alter the violator's future driving behavior.

Washingtonville Investigation Division

The Investigations Section is responsible for assisting the Patrol Section; following-up on major crimes, vice, organized crime and drug related complaints.
The detectives are responsible for the handling of long-term and/or complex investigations. They are tasked with identification, apprehension, and prosecution of criminal offenders. In 2004, they worked on more than 200 cases. Cases ranged from telephone harassment, sexual assaults, criminal damaging, and several drug interactions. The detectives are also responsible for background checks for potential hires and obtaining search warrants.
The detectives frequently interact with surrounding law enforcement agencies when conducting investigations. The members of the section also conducted training for other police officers in the area such as crime scene protection, eyewitness evidence, child sexual assault, and drug and gang investigation techniques.
